Did you know that air pollution kills an estimated 5,900 Canadians each year?

Air pollution degrades our immune response and is a serious threat to people of all ages. Poor air quality, whether indoors and outdoors, can make us more susceptible to infections, like the flu or COVID-19. It makes symptoms more severe. (About 5% of pneumonia deaths in Canada are attributed to air pollution.) It can make breathing difficult, irritate your lungs and airways, and worsen chronic diseases.

For people with asthma, pollution can trigger life-threatening attacks. Asthma is the most common chronic disease affecting children and results in needless deaths. For people who already struggle to breathe, such as those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bad air can be fatal. COPD is the number one reason people are hospitalized in Canada.

Naturally occurring pollutants like radon, found in the ground around many homes, may be a cause of higher lung cancer rates in people who’ve never smoked. The same is true of second-hand cigarette smoke. Lung cancer affects more Canadians than colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

  • Change or clean your home air filter
  • Replace gas-powered yard tools with electric- or hand-powered tools
  • Switch to using natural all-purpose cleaner only
  • Switch to unscented beauty and household products
  • Open a window
  • Test for Radon
  • Install an air quality monitor at your home
  • Install solar panels at your home – there are government incentives available (



  • Plant a home garden or plot in a community garden
  • Plant a tree
  • Keep indoor plants around your home



  • Leave your car at home by:
    • Telecommuting/attending meetings remotely
    • Walk, bike or scoot to the store or transit stop
    • Taking public transit
    • Carpooling when safe
  • Don't idle your engine
  • Switch to a hybrid or zero-emission vehicle
  • Change your car cabin air filter
